Making an impact with work readiness

The UCT Careers Service hosted Be Your Future Work Readiness Programme in partnership with KPMG for commerce students.  The aim of the programme was to equip students with skills needed for the world of work by providing practical scenarios in recruitment and selection process from an employer’s perspective.  The event was advertised via career hub, social media and forwarded to faculty contacts to assist with marketing.

There were four sessions, facilitated on Wednesday evenings, focussing on:

  •     Skills and competencies for the world of work  
  •     Do it yourself CV – Online coaching guide (Plan your CV, Create your CV content)
  •     CV and interviews – making the connection
  •     Introduction to networking and presentation skills

Sixty-eight students booked to attend but due to test weeks and other academic commitments, forty-seven students attended the first session.  All students who participated were issued with a certificate of attendance in various stages.   

Make an impact

The event was advertised with a tag line “Make an impact. Get to Malaysia” an opportunity for students to be selected to represent UCT nationally to the 2018 KPMG International Case Competition (KICC) in Johannesburg, the winning group will advance through to the next rounds of the competition to represent South Africa internationally.

Four students, are selected to present UCT at national level, competing with other South African universities in Johannesburg on 5 - 8 December.  They are:

  •     Dhlula Vuyisile – 2nd year Bachelor of Business Science: Actuarial
  •     Mei Kude – 3rd year Bachelor of Commerce: Finance CA Stream
  •     Mthalane Tholithemba – Bachelor of Commerce: Finance General
  •     Seetal Akshar – 2nd year Bachelor of Commerce: Management Studies

Congratulations to all – get your passports ready, Malaysia may be next!
