UCT CAREERS SERVICE WINS TOP AWARDS

UCT Careers Service has been voted as the Best Careers Service and Best Careers Fair for 2016. The results were announced at the South African Graduate Employers Association (SAGEA) research seminar on 8 July.

This follows the independent SAGEA Employer Benchmark Survey 2016, which was conducted among 98 leading graduate employers in South Africa, who voted and placed the UCT Careers Service in the top spot.

UCT Careers Service Director, David Casey, said the awards served as ‘fantastic recognition’ from employers as a key stakeholder group who engaged with the Careers Service.

He said: ‘These awards are measures of success for the continuous hard work, dedication and commitment of the Careers Service team during semester one and two of the graduate recruiting season; the careers advisory service offerings as well as operations/administration and communications key-support functions that benefit UCT students who prepare for and transition into the world of work.’

Associate Professor Mbulungeni Madiba, Acting Dean of the Centre for Higher Education Development, reiterated Casey’s sentiment. He said: ‘The Careers Service deserves to be congratulated for having been voted the Best Careers Service and Best Careers Fair for 2016. These awards are a great recognition of the excellent work the unit is doing to support students through their transitions between the university and the workplace.’

The research seminar provides SAGEA members (who include higher-education institutions, employers and service providers) with a platform to celebrate achievements and best practise in the area of graduate employment. 

According to a SAGEA press release: ‘Recruitment amongst South Africa’s leading graduate employers is at an all-time high, however competition for the very best candidates is as strong as ever.’

The survey had some good news for potential job seekers as ‘graduate vacancies are set to increase by 10.3 per cent in 2017, compared to the numbers recruited in 2016'.

The press release continued: ‘Employers continue to look for engaging ways to interact with students to create a useful dialogue and help them to understand all of the opportunities on offer.’
