Changing Faces, Turning Tides

“Changing Faces, Turning Tides,” reflects my evolving journey as a student—personally and professionally—at UCT. It captures the transitions from traditional ideas of success, measured by grades or career milestones, toward a deeper search for meaning, belonging, and impact.

Inspired by the UCT Careers Service art showcase theme, the piece weaves together images of diversity and shared experience—the “faces” and “hands” that shape our collective future. I wanted to highlight how success is not defined by individual achievement alone, but by community, inclusion, and the courage to remake our dreams together. For me, the future of work is not a race for the prize or traditional careers, but a process of uplifting ourselves and others, daring to build new paths where we all belong.

Writing this poem was shaped through the realization that my education is as much about connection and growth as it is about any destination. It’s a story of resilience through setbacks, and the joy of finding purpose beyond the boundaries the world sets. I entered UCT as a mature student and although I navigated through painful and character-building moments, studying here remains a resounding positive in my life and @myuct will always have a special place in my heart.

By sharing these words, I hope to inspire others at UCT to embrace their multifaceted journeys and to celebrate the power we hold when we lift each other up. Together, we define what meaningful work—and a meaningful life—can be.
