There is a first time for everything!  Some 150 Humanities students travelled from UCT to Investec headquarters in Cape Town CBD on 1 October 2015 to network with top executives who wished to recruit the ‘the breadth of transferable skills that Humanities students can offer a bank’. This was according to Tshidi Khunou, Manager of Graduate Recruitment at Invectec.

This innovative career skills for working life module has been a six week programme delivered by UCT Careers Advisor for Humanities, Alexis Pillay, and Business Specialists from Investec. The programme was highly rated by UCT Humanities students.

‘The future is bright with multiple career options available to UCT Humanities students,’ said David Casey, Director of UCT Careers Service. Participating students received certificates and were exposed to experts, who covered topics such as getting ready for the next career move, understanding the graduate labour market and employability skills sought by graduate recruiters, projecting a professional image, commercial awareness, online branding and its applications and making connections with, and accessing, graduate recruiters.

Vinnie Maxahana, a first year Humanities student, said: ‘This module should be part of our course – it has helped me understand what I need to do to make myself stand out and be a student employers want to interview – thanks to Careers Service for organising this to help us with our future careers.’

Tanya Little, Head of Private Banking HR at Investec said: ‘Humanities students are highly regarded in the bank given the high level of problem solving and critical thinking skills they can add to any team’.
